3rd International Conference on Marine/Maritime Spatial Planning

The 3rd International Conference on Marine/Maritime Spatial Planning will be held on November 22 and 23, 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. The conference is jointly hosted by the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission (DG MARE) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) in partnership with the Government of Spain and the Port of Barcelona. This 3rd Conference aims to follow up from the 2nd held on 15-17 March 2017 in Paris and to assess the state-of-the-art implementation of MSP and discuss challenges and opportunities to achieve the MSProadmap priority areas and target (at least 1/3 of the global maritime areas under national jurisdictions with marine spatial plans by 2030).

The proceedings over the two days will be structured around thematic panels including Knowledge support, Capacity development and awareness, Transboundary cooperation, Climate-smart MSP, Marine protection and restoration and Sustainable blue economy.

Closing the Circle Research Fellow Sarah Mahadeo will co-moderate the session on Transboundary Cooperation on Tuesday 22 November 2022, 16h00 – 17h30 (CET) and which will feature Anna Hunke (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany, HELCOM-VASAB MSP WG), Željka Škaričić (Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre – UNEP PAP/RAC), Abdoulaye Diagana (Abidjan Convention), Timothy Andrew (Nairobi Convention), Wenxi Zhu (IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific) and Susanna DeBeauville-Scott (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States).
